Getting with the times

I like to think that I have a broad taste when it comes to music. I know what I like and I know what I don’t.

One thing I am guilty of though is not giving the new music of today a chance and often been quite critical towards it in general. I guess the problem I have stemmed from the many generic radio stations we have here in the UK. The radio stations that you are forced to listen to at work, pumping out a constant stream of crap that is regarded as popular within today’s culture.

Now, I’m not saying all radio stations are bad as they are many that are good. But you will all know which radio stations I’m talking about. Even so, I should not have let this become an excuse to turn my attention away from the many amazing bands and musicians who are in fact creating great new music.

So here is a list, in no particular order of some of the bands and musicians I have found myself enjoying lately.

Yours Truly

Yours Truly are a pop-punk band from Australia, that I first came across listening to their song ‘High Hopes’. Now I grew up when pop-punk bands were big and I think just listening to Yours Truly takes me back to happy times. They are melodic, catchy, and for the first time since I was a kid, I felt excited. Excited to be listening to something new and I loved that I had found a new band that I couldn’t wait to listen to everything else they had produced.

Belmont

Another pop-punk band, Belmont astonished me with the song ‘Overstepping’. They definitely let the drummer loose in this band and that’s what I loved. The fast pace, whilst keeping those melodic riffs just lit up my brain like a firework show. I couldn’t help but try and air drum along.

Gregory Alan Isakov

I first heard of Gregory Isakov when the song ‘If I Go I’m Goin’ played on the tv show Californication and I loved it. A song of just pure raw emotion and to my delight I heard it again on another great tv show, The Haunting Of Hill House. It was then I decided to probe further and see what else I was missing. Well, I’m actually ashamed it took me as long as it did, to finally go and listen to the rest of this amazing musicians work.

Stand Atlantic

Another Australian pop-punk band that I think I came across before Yours Truly, which then also led me onto finding Belmont. So Stand Atlantic is where my recent love affair with pop-punk got started and what a band to start it with. Their song ‘Coffee At Midnight’ just rocks and even after checking out everything else the band has to offer, it’s still my favorite. Along with Yours Truly, this is a band who I feel has a lot of potential and I look forward to their future works.

This is just what I have found myself really enjoying lately and I’m sure there will be plenty more to come. If you haven’t heard of any of these bands, then I suggest you give them a listen.
